Schiller, G. (Producer). (1984). Before Stonewall [Film]. (Available from PBS Video, 1320 Braddock Place, Alexandria, VA 22314). Rita Mae Brown is the narrator for this film about life before gay/lesbian liberation. It gives a clear perspective of the changes which have occurred in our culture over time and creates a sensitivity to issues affecting older LGBT's using history as a marker.
Wilson, A. A. (1998). Bubbeh Lee & Me [Film]. (Available from New Day Films at http://www.newday.com/films/BubbehLee.html). This Emmy Award nominated film is the story of a feisty, 87-year old Jewish grandmother and her gay grandson who bond during a visit. From feelings of alienation to acceptance, this film examines the legacies passed through generations and illustrates the journey of self-discovery facilitated by sharing thoughts and intimate secrets with another human being.
Hoffman, D. (1994). Complaints of a Dutiful Daughter [Film]. (Available from Women Make Movies at http://www.wmm.com/catalog/pages/c127.htm). Complaints of a Dutiful Daughter is an intimate look into the life of a woman with Alzheimer's Disease and her daughter's reaction to the illness as it debilitates her mother. The film spans the various stages of Alzheimer's and shows the daughter's response to the illness in each. This is much more than a story about A.D. and family caregiving. It is a life-affirming exploration of family relations, aging and change, the meaning of memory, and love. Gene Siskel says that it's one of the best films on Alzheimer's Disease!
Winer, L. (1999) Golden Threads [Film]. (Available from POV Public Television Films at http://www.itvs.org/goldenthreads/index.html). This documentary film features Christine Burton, a community organizer who, at the age of eighty, founded a global networking service for lesbians over fifty. Golden Threads profiles Burton's unconventional life and overturns many of our own stereotypes about the aging process. It is a great film to use with outyouth groups and at community gatherings to promote intergenerational dialogue about the life choices each of us has made and how that impacts us now as we grow old.
Anderson, J. & Coolidge, M. (2000). If These Walls Could Talk II [Film]. (Available from IMDB at http://www.us.imdb.com/Title?0206036). This is a good three-part movie. The first segment details a lesbian couple (starring Vannessa Redgrave) in their "golden-ages" during the 60's and what happens when the intimate relationship they shared is not acknowledged after a partner's death. Note: Attorneys often use this segment of the film at LGBT workshops to demonstrate what can happen when wills and retirement planning are not orchestrated by homosexual couples.
Dickson, D. (Producer). (2002). Ruthie and Connie: Every Room in the House [Film]. (Available at http://www.ruthieandconnie.com/). Ruthie and Connie: Every Room In The House is a film about two women in love and the price they pay to be themselves in mainstream society. Ruthie Berman and Connie Kurtz appear to be conventional housewives but their passionate interest in community issues and their passionate interest in each other suddenly turns their world upside down. Overcoming many obstacles, their relationship spans 40 years of friendship and 25 years as loving partners. This is one of the newest films available - My friend who saw this in San Francisco says it's FABULOUS!
Poirer, A.C. (Producer). (1989). Salut Victor [Film]. (Available in French with English subtitles from NTSC, Toronto, Canada). A French-Canadian film about two men who meet in a nursing home and fall in love. This "late-in-life romance" develops between two men, Phillippe and Victor. Victor is the nursing home rebel and loves to cause havoc and have fun with the nursing home staff. Phillippe is a very staunch and serious loner who is unhappy about his placement and wants to simply sit in his room and pass his last days alone with little contact with other residents. The film is very representative of two gay men in their 70's--one very open about his orientation and one very closeted.
The Sum of Us Dowling & Burton. (1994). The Sum of Us [Film]. (Available from IMDB at http://www.us.imdb.com/Title?0111309). This is one of Russell Crowe's "less talked about" films. The Sum of Us is an Australian film about love--platonic, sexual (both gay and straight), but most importantly, familial. As the film progresses, it appears that the fa
