Gay and Gray: The Older Homosexual Man (2nd ed.) by Ray Berger This "classic work" on older gay men includes information on demographics, relationships, psychological and social adaptations, some of the prejudices faced, attitudes towards society and socialization, and theories of successful aging for this special population. The appendix includes a questionnaire on homosexuality and aging. The second edition is an excellent resource for any health and human service provider. This book gives the reader true insight into the lives of older homosexuals from sexual attitudes and behaviors to theories for successful aging within this special population. Chapter 14 includes information collected from four hour interviews with men ranging in age from 40-92 and includes ethnographic information about the gay community. This is one of the best resources in book form to be found, although the author has several collaborative books on the subject of gay aging. Outing Age: Public Policy Issues Affecting Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Elders by Cahill, South & Spade This report outlines major public policy issues facing our LGBT seniors, including federal aging programs; public health; disability; long term care and caregiving; housing concerns; employment and income support programs such as social security. Recommendation for advocacy are also outlined. Village Elders by photojournalist Penny Coleman Village Elders is a book of black-and-white stills with accompanying text which tells the stories of older adults in the Big Apple's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities. "The collection of faces and oral histories I have gathered form a collage of exquisite and intimate details of what it was like 'back then' and how it is today for those who lived through the social revolutions of the 20th century." The book grew from an a series of exhibitions and has toured in North Carolina. Counseling Gay Men & Lesbians: Journey to the End of the Rainbow by Dworkin & Gutierrez An excellent resource for therapists working with gays, lesbians and bisexuals of all ages, but with additional emphasis on the developemental stages associated with midlife and beyond. Case study examples, as well as contributions from other aging experts, provide helpful suggestions for assisting the older adult client. The Oldest Gay Couple in America: A 70 Year Journey Through Same Sex America by Gean Harwood This is an autobiography of Gean Harwood which includes his life from birth to his adulthood years with his longtime companion, Bruhs Mero. The story is a loving and touching chronicle of a gay man living in a time when gays did not the have freedom to be as open about their orientation. Bruhs dies of Alzheimer's disease in 1995 and Gean discusses how he comes to peace with the loss of his partner and his own inevitable mortality at the age of 90. Although this is an autobiography, it is an excellent resource for the novice social worker or human service provider who may have little knowledge of the lives of older gays or lesbians. The book gives an historical perspective of closeted and out gay men during the early and middle 1900's. Golden Men: The Power of Gay Midlife by Kooden & Flowers Dr. Kooden is a noted gay psychotherapist who uses his research and professional experience to examine aging and its impact on key areas of gay life: body image and sexuality; physical and spiritual health; work and play; friendships and relationships and much more. This book offers help, strength, support, and direction for revealing the skills many of us have already mastered, but are not aware we possess. Realizing our true potential can play an important part in every gay man's empowerment and acceptance of his self in midlife. Gay Midlife and Maturity by John Alan Lee An edited collection of essays and reports portraying a much more positive view of gay lifestyles in middle age and later life by one of "the first 'public' gays in Canadian professional life." The contents include a collection of information from several research studies continuing in the US, Canada and Australia.
