History Timeline


1997---In February SAGE/Milwaukee began to rent space in the Lake Park Lutheran Church basement and held most of its thirty-four events during the year in that space. SAGE joined the
Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups (CWAG); Board Member Eldon Murray attending their annual two-day conference and casting our votes.  Thirty-five events were held during the year.

1998---Fifty-nine events were held during the year, most of them in the space at the Lake Park Lutheran Church.  In early May, Eldon Murray attended in New York the first ever two-day conference on Aging in the Gay and Lesbian Community.  In late May, he was honored in Los Angeles by the
International Gay and Lesbian Archives as one of only thirty-two persons designated as Pioneers in the Gay Movement.  He accepted the award before a crowd estimated at 1,000 persons.   

1999---In January the organization took a cubicle space at the new Milwaukee LGBT Center and began to hold most of its 58 weekly events in one of their meeting rooms.  In May (Older Americans Month) SAGE raised funds and brought into Milwaukee the nationally acclaimed exhibit entitled
Village Elders:  Portraits and Stories  by photographer Penny Coleman.  The exhibit consisted of a collection of beautiful black and white portraits of gay and lesbian elders accompanied by biographies.  The exhibit was on display at the LGBT Community Center for two weeks, then went to the offices of the Milwaukee County Department on Aging for a week and then to the Washington Park Senior Center for a week.  Funds were donated by The Cream City Foundation, The Milwaukee County Department on Aging, The Metropolitan Community Church, The LGBT Community Center, and The Wisconsin Light to make this exhibit possible. 

2000---During the month of May, (Older Americans Month) Eldon Murray was honored by being selected as one of five persons to be included in
The Milwaukee County Senior Citizens Hall of Fame  In May, Murray also attended a two-day conference at Fordham University in New York City titled Out of the Closet--Into the Future:  Midlife and Aging in Gay America.  In October, SAGE/Milwaukee Charter Member Leonard Sobczak was selected to serve on The Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission.  In October SAGE signed a contract with The Milwaukee County Department on Aging that provided funds for two "Needs Assessment Surveys"; one for older LGBT Persons and one for professionals
