SAGE/Milwaukee (Senior Action in a Gay Environment) is an independent and separate organization, modeled after and affiliated with SAGE, Inc. located in New York City. That organization is the nation's oldest and largest group serving older gays and lesbians, serving some 7,000 persons in that area.
After an organizing meeting in December of 1993, SAGE/Milwaukee held its first meeting on January 8, 1994. It has had meetings and events in every month (usually every week) since that date. Incorporated in Wisconsin as a non-profit corporation, the group also has an official status as a Charitable group in Wisconsin and a tax-exempt status (501.c.3) is in place so that contributions and donations are tax deductible.
SAGE/Milwaukee rents space at 1845 North Farwell, Ste. 220 and holds its events there unless otherwise noted.
SAGE/Milwaukee is a membership organization (Dues are $25 a year, with low income persons qualifying for a partial scholarship.) However, a paid membership is not required to attend events sponsored by the group.
A monthly newsletter is published and mailed to all members and others wishing to receive it. The newsletter lists each weekly event and provides readers an update on organizational news as well as other news and services available to older persons. The newsletter is also available as a pdf attachment to an email for those with computers. Simply send an email to email@sagemilwaukee.org to be added to the email list.
SAGE/Milwaukee is a member of The Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups (CWAG), works closely with The Milwaukee County Department on Aging and other agencies such as The Counseling Center of Milwaukee, Senior Law, and Interfaith.
